How to Earn Yield Like a Bond β€” Without Banks

Using Actuator on PulseChain

Self-custody, smart contracts, and the HEX yield curve. A complete guide to earning bond-like yield without a bank account, broker, or minimum investment.

The Problem with Traditional Yield

Earning meaningful yield through traditional finance has become increasingly difficult:

  • Low interest rates: Bank savings accounts often pay 0.01–2% APY β€” barely keeping pace with inflation, if at all
  • Bank custody: Your money is held by a bank. They lend it out, profit from it, and can freeze your account. You do not truly control it.
  • Inflation eroding returns: Even "high-yield" savings accounts rarely outpace real inflation. Your purchasing power slowly declines.
  • High minimums: Bonds, CDs, and money market funds often require $1,000–$10,000+ minimums, locking out smaller investors
  • Gatekeepers: Need a broker account, KYC, credit checks, and settlement delays just to earn a few percent

The system is designed so that you take the risk (inflation, custody) while banks capture most of the reward.  There is a better way.

The Crypto Alternative

DeFi (decentralized finance) lets you earn yield without banks. The core principles:

1

Self-custody: You hold your own assets in a wallet you control. No bank can freeze, rehypothecate, or lend out your funds.

2

Smart contracts: Yield is generated by code, not by a bank lending your money. The rules are transparent and enforced on-chain.

3

DeFi yield: Earn from staking, liquidity provision, and yield curve trading β€” not from a bank's lending margin.

4

PulseChain low fees: Transactions cost fractions of a cent, making yield strategies accessible to everyone β€” not just the wealthy.

How Actuator Creates Bond-Like Yield

Actuator turns locked HEX stakes into tradable, bond-like tokens. The flow:

1

Stake HEX β€” lock HEX in the HEX contract to earn daily yield (T-Share based)

2

Born portable β€” staking through Actuator creates the stake as a HEX Stake Instance (HSI), a self-contained contract, already delegated

3

Mint HTTs β€” create fungible tokens backed by your stake, choosing a maturity date

4

Sell at discount = immediate liquidity β€” sell HTTs on PulseX at a price below their redemption value. The buyer gets yield by holding to maturity; you get immediate liquidity.

5

Or hold to maturity = full HEX β€” hold your HTTs and redeem them 1:1 for HEX on or after their redemption day

Step-by-Step: How to Earn Yield with Actuator

1

Get a wallet β€” install MetaMask or connect a hardware wallet; whoever holds the seed phrase holds the wallet.  See our wallets guide.

2

Buy HEX on PulseChain β€” acquire HEX and some PLS for gas: swap for HEX on PulseX, or bring ETH, USDC or another coin over a bridge and swap it for HEX on PulseChain.  eHEX sent over the official bridge arrives as a different token, “HEX from Ethereum”, which cannot be staked; it becomes PulseChain’s HEX only by a swap.

3

Create HSI on Actuator β€” at app.actuator.finance, stake HEX; the stake is created as a HEX Stake Instance (HSI), already delegated to the Actuator protocol.  An existing HSI can be delegated there instead.

4

Mint HTTs β€” choose a maturity date and mint HTTs against your delegated stake. You can mint any amount up to the available value.

5

Sell on PulseX or hold to maturity β€” sell HTTs on PulseX for immediate liquidity (the discount is the buyer’s yield and the seller’s cost), or hold until the redemption day and redeem 1:1 for HEX at app.actuator.finance.  See our PulseX guide.

6

Optional: Provide liquidity for ACTR rewards β€” add HTT/HEX liquidity on PulseX and deposit the LP tokens in the matching Actuator farm to earn ACTR on top of your HTT yield; only the HTT-4000, HTT-5000, HTT-6000, HTT-7000 and HTT-8000 farms pay ACTR, until October 9, 2027.  See Farming ACTR.

Understanding the HTT Yield Curve

HTTs have fixed maturity dates, and their market price reflects the time remaining until maturity.  This creates a yield curve β€” though no issuer or central bank sets it: PulseX pools do, and every point on it converges to exactly 1 HEX on its day:

  • Near-dated HTTs (maturing soon) trade close to 1 HEX β€” a small discount, so a small total return, earned over a short wait.
  • Far-dated HTTs (maturing years out) trade well below 1 HEX β€” a bigger discount and a bigger total return, spread over a long wait.  Per year it can be more or less: on 2026-10-26, HTT-7000's 52% discount worked out to 8.9% APR, HTT-3000's 12% to 10.5% APR.

So the choice is about time: a near-dated HTT returns its discount soon; a far-dated one returns a bigger discount much later, at a lower rate per year on today’s curve.  Neither is safer than the other β€” both redeem for exactly 1 HEX.  What differs is how long your HEX is spoken for, and how thin the pool is that you must trade through.

Live example, 2026-10-26: HTT-3000 at 0.879 HEX redeems in 1.3 years β€” a 14% total return in HEX, 10.5% APR.  HTT-7000 at 0.478 HEX redeems in 12.3 years β€” a 109% total return, 8.9% APR.  The bigger discount is the smaller yield per year.  Prices move daily; the Yield Curve has every HTT series.

For Traditional Investors

If you are coming from traditional finance, here is the simplest way to think about Actuator:

  • HTTs are zero-coupon bonds: Buy at a discount, redeem at full value at maturity. The discount is your yield.
  • You are the custodian: No broker holds your bond. You hold the token in your own wallet. This is empowering but means you are responsible for security.
  • No minimum: Neither the HEX contract nor the Actuator contracts set a minimum; each step costs PLS gas.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much yield can I earn with Actuator HTTs?

Yield is the discount you buy at: every HTT redeems for exactly 1 HEX on its day, so an HTT bought at 0.879 HEX returns 13.8% in HEX over the wait.Β  Far-dated HTTs carry bigger discounts, but a bigger discount is not automatically more per year, because the same gap is spread over more years.Β  On 2026-10-26 HTT-3000 was priced at 10.5% APR and HTT-7000 at 8.88% APR.Β  Prices are set by trading in PulseX pools and move daily; the Yield Curve page prints the live curve.Β  HTT/HEX LP tokens deposited in the farms also earn ACTR, until 2027-10-09.

Is earning yield with Actuator safer than a bank account?

No β€” they carry fundamentally different risks.Β  Bank accounts (in many jurisdictions) are insured up to certain limits and denominated in fiat.Β  Actuator HTTs are crypto assets exposed to smart contract risk, HEX price volatility, and have no insurance.Β  Actuator HTTs also offer full self-custody, and their yield is paid in HEX, whose dollar price moves daily.Β  They are complementary, not replacements.

Do I need to hold HTTs until maturity to earn yield?

No.Β  You can sell HTTs anytime on PulseX before maturity.Β  If you buy at a discount and the price moves toward par as maturity approaches, you can capture the yield by selling early.Β  However, if market conditions change and the discount widens, selling before maturity could result in a loss.Β  Holding to maturity guarantees the full redemption value (barring smart contract failure).

What do I need to start earning yield with Actuator?

You need: (1) a self-custody wallet like MetaMask or a hardware wallet, (2) PLS (PulseChain's native token) for gas fees, (3) HEX on PulseChain, and (4) access to the Actuator app at app.actuator.finance or PulseX for trading.Β  No broker account, no KYC, no minimum balance.

How does the yield curve work with HTTs?

Every HTT converges to exactly 1 HEX on its own day, so the curve is a row of discounts by maturity: near-dated close to 1 HEX, far-dated well below it.Β  A bigger discount is a bigger total return, not necessarily more per year.Β  On 2026-10-26 HTT-3000 was at 10.5% APR against HTT-7000 at 8.88% APR, an inverted curve.Β  There is no issuer and no coupon; the only positions are to buy, hold, sell, or mint against your own stake; and trading in PulseX pools sets every price.
